James Milner is showing no signs of slowing down — after quitting international football to throw himself into Jurgen Klopp’s gruelling Liverpool fitness regime.

The former Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Manchester City midfielder is enjoying arguably the best season of his career at the age of 32 as the Reds head towards a Champions League semi-final showdown with Roma.

He puts that down to his decision to bring an end to his England career in 2016, after 61 caps. But he also reckons the physical demands that Klopp places on his players have given him an added edge.

Milner said: “We train hard at the club, and fitness has always been a strength of mine.

“Obviously the decision with England was a tough one, but the manager has looked after me in international weeks, giving me time off. It really does help me. link sbo

“But I’m not at the stage where he’ll tell me to have a sauna instead of going out to train. And I don’t think you can do that, the way we play.

We train very hard here. I am still mixing it and covering the ground for Liverpool and it is probably one of the hardest places to play because of the physical demands.

“I am in a good place because people seem to look at your age and think once you get over 30 then you’re coming to the end.

“I’d like to think I’ve got a number of years left in me and I feel really good.

“That is down to the great work the staff at the club do looking after us and the facilities we have and obviously eating the right things and doing the right things at the right time off the field.”

Milner isn’t the only Anfield hero to emerge from left field this season.

Andrew Robertson was being relegated with Hull this time last year, but after taking time to settle after an £8million switch to Merseyside in the summer, he has emerged as arguably the Premier League’s most consistent left-back.

Robertson was an eight-year-old schoolboy growing up in the Glasgow district of Giffnock in 2002 when Zinedine Zidane volleyed Real Madrid to a Champions League triumph just a couple of miles away at Hampden Park.

He recalled: “That game between Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen is probably the first the first Champions League final I remember. link sbo

Manchester United transfer rumours: Alex Sandro, Gareth Bale and Wilfried Zaha

maxbet Manchester United near a summer deal for a new defender, as we round-up the latest rumours on Monday, May 14. United are set to complete a £50m move for Juventus left-back Alex Sandro after the FA Cup final, according to reports in the Mirror. The Brazil international, 27, has a contract with the Serie A champions that runs until the summer of 2020.

Meanwhile, United boss Jose Mourinho says midfielder Michael Carrick will become his assistant manager at Old Trafford, reports The Sun. The veteran hung up his boots after Sunday afternoon's final game of the season against Watford. Elsewhere, the Red Devils are lining up a £53m end-of-season swoop for Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, says Don Balon. maxbet

United are reportedly hoping to be able to persuade the European champions to offload the Wales international by offering out-of-favour France international Anthony Martial as part of the deal. And finally, PSG will attempt to make United playmaker Paul Pogba their marquee signing this summer if they lose Neymar to Madrid, says the Daily Star. The Brazil forward is expected to leave the Parc des Princes for the Santiago Bernabeu next season. maxbet

Liverpool news: Adam Lallana makes England World Cup squad revelation

sbobet24 ADAM LALLANA believes he would have been included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup had it not been for his injury problems. The Liverpool midfielder started just one Premier League game all season after continuous hamstring problems after an initial issue picked up in pre-season. That sidelined the 30-year-old until late November while a recurrence of his hamstring problems denied him the chance to stake a late claim for the Three Lions squad towards the end of the season. His difficult campaign followed an instrumental year in which he contributed eight goals and seven assists for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

And the 2016 England Player of the Year - who was named on the six-man back-up list to Southgate’s 23-man selection for this summer’s tournament in Russia - is confident he would have been on the plane if not for his lack of games. On Southgate’s support, Lallana said: “I have had a couple of good chats with him this week. He knows this week would have been difficult for me.

sbobet24 “I think he would want me there [at the World Cup], but circumstances mean it is just not possible for one reason or another. “I appreciate how he has been with me. I couldn’t have asked for a manager to communicate with me any better. The respect he has shown me I really appreciate. “I have been in constant dialogue with Gareth throughout the whole season really not just since my last injury, the hamstring back in March, and he has been absolutely fantastic with me. “He called me to ask if I would be happy to be on stand-by. I said to him that I would always be available.”

Despite failing to make the manager’s final selection, Lallana turned up to England training early and he admitted the difficult of joining his compatriots at St George’s Park in the knowledge that he would not be travelling to Eastern Europe next week. “I felt like I did the right thing coming and training with England in the last week,” he added. “It has not been easy. It was always about being available and helping the gaffer and the squad by being part of the sessions and being around it. He explained the situation and was completely honest.

“His communication with the players is one of his greatest strengths. He never messes you around, so you know where you stand and that’s been the case since he called me to say I wouldn’t be in the 23. “Of course, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I want to be out there, but these things happen, it’s the circumstances and I wish the lads the best of luck. I will be their biggest supporter I can tell you that.” England open their World Cup campaign against Tunisia in Volgograd a week on Monday - June 18 (7pm). sbobet24
